First Olympic Marathon
When the Olympic Games were revived in Greece in 1896, Spyridon Louis of Athens won the race in front of his countrymen in a time of 2:58:50. He never competed in a major race again and the silver cup given to Louis for his victory was sold for 541,250 pounds ($860,000) in 2012.
