On this day in 1961, Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris become the first teammates to each hit fifty home runs in the same season when 'the Mick' goes deep twice, including a round-tripper in the ninth to tie the score, in the Yankees' 8-5 victory over Detroit at the Bronx ballpark. Roger Maris, who also blasted a pair of homers against the Tigers yesterday, has hit 53 homers in his pursuit of Babe Ruth's single season mark of 60.
