September 23rd, 1908
Among baseball fans, this day is known for Merkle's boner. At the end of a tie game the New York Giants 19-year-old Fred Merkle failed to touch second base. The Chicago Cubs appealed and Merkle was called out for the third out of the inning.
Because the field was inundated the fans, the game was called as a tie. It was replayed on the last day of the season, Oct. 8. The Giants and Cubs were tied in the standings and Chicago won 4-2. The Cubs would go on to win the World Series, their last world championship in franchise history. Had Merkle touched second, the Giants would have won the pennant instead.
