December 27, 1953

On this day in 1953, the Detroit Lions defeated the Cleveland Browns by a score of 17-16 in the NFL Championship game Dec. 27, 1953. On the game-winning drive, quarterback Jim Doran hit Bobby Layne for two crucial pass completions, the last a 33-yard touchdown pass with 2:08 to play.

The idea of both the Lions and Browns in a Super Bowl in the modern NFL is almost absurd. Neither team has qualified for the Super Bowl since the AFL-NFL merger.
