January 28, 1959
On this day in 1959, the Green Bay Packers hired Vince Lombardi as their new head coach. Lombardi was an assistant with the New York Giants when he left to take over the 1-10-1 Packers. He led the Packers to a 7-5 record in his first season and a runner-up finish in the NFL in 1960. In 1961, he won his first title against the Giants. Lombardi would win a total of five NFL championships, including the first two Super Bowls.
