On this day in 1994, Dan Jansen of the U.S. set a speed skating record in the 500 meter race at the World Championships. Jansen participated in four different Olympics in his career. This record of 35.76 seconds was set in Canada and was one of several times Jansen set a record in the race. Later in 1994 he missed out an Olympic medal in the 500 meter race but did set a new record in the 1,000 meter race.
